How to Convert Between Metric and Imperial Without a Formula
A handful of rough shortcuts cover most everyday situations: multiply kilometers by 0.6 for miles, kilograms by 2.2 for pounds, and centimeters by 0.4 for inches. These are close enough for quick estimates, but not precise enough for cooking, construction, or anything where exact figures matter.
Most metric-imperial conversions people actually need day to day don't require a calculator at all — a small set of memorized shortcuts gets close enough, as long as you know when "close enough" stops being good enough.
The shortcuts worth memorizing
Distance: kilometers × 0.6 ≈ miles (or divide by 1.6). Weight: kilograms × 2.2 ≈ pounds. Length: centimeters × 0.4 ≈ inches (or divide by 2.5). Temperature: double the Celsius figure and add 30 gets a rough Fahrenheit estimate — not exact, but close enough for checking a weather forecast at a glance.
These shortcuts trade a small amount of accuracy for speed — each is within a few percent of the exact conversion factor, which is fine for a quick mental estimate but compounds into a real error over multiple steps or larger numbers.
When to stop estimating
For cooking (where a few grams can matter for baking chemistry), construction and DIY (where a small error compounds across multiple cuts or measurements), medical dosing, or anything being submitted officially, exact conversion factors matter and a calculator should replace the shortcut.
For everyday, low-stakes situations — is this suitcase near the airline's weight limit, roughly how far is that drive — the shortcuts above are genuinely sufficient and much faster than reaching for a tool.
