How to Use the Net Worth Calculator

List each asset (cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles) at current value, and each liability (mortgage, loans, credit card balances) at current outstanding balance — the calculator totals both columns and subtracts liabilities from assets to show your net worth.

The Net Worth Calculator totals both sides of the balance sheet automatically — here's how to fill it in accurately.

Entering assets at current value

For each asset, use current market value rather than original purchase price or contribution amount — for real estate and vehicles especially, this makes a meaningful difference to the accuracy of the final result.

Entering liabilities at current balance

For each liability, use the current outstanding balance, not the original loan amount — a mortgage or loan balance decreases over time as payments are made, and using the original amount would understate net worth.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include jointly owned assets and debts?

For an individual net worth figure, include your actual ownership share; for a household figure, including the full jointly owned amounts on both sides gives a combined household net worth instead.

How often should I recalculate my net worth?

Quarterly or semi-annually is a common cadence that captures meaningful trends without being overly sensitive to short-term market noise in investment or real estate values.
