How to Use the Savings Goal Calculator

Enter your savings goal amount, current savings (if any), a monthly contribution amount, and an expected interest rate — the calculator shows how long it will take to reach the goal, or, alternatively, how much you'd need to contribute monthly to hit a specific target date.

The Savings Goal Calculator works in either direction — here's how to use it for either question.

Finding how long a goal will take

Enter the target amount, current savings, monthly contribution, and interest rate to see the projected time to reach the goal — useful for checking whether a current savings plan is realistically on pace.

Finding the contribution needed for a specific date

Alternatively, entering a specific target date instead of a contribution amount shows the monthly contribution required to reach the goal by that date — useful for a goal with a fixed deadline, like a wedding or a planned move.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include interest for a short-term goal?

For a goal within a year or two, interest has a modest effect and can reasonably be left conservative or excluded for simplicity — for a longer-term goal, including a realistic interest rate gives a meaningfully more accurate timeline.

What if I already have some savings toward the goal?

Enter that amount as your current savings — the calculator starts the projection from that existing balance rather than from zero, giving a more accurate remaining timeline.
